“A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.” — Madeleine L’Engle

ABOUT US

Sunrise Elementary School is a true cross-section of America. We serve a diverse population that is almost a mirror of the demographic breakdown of The United States. About fifty percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately ten percent of our students have a family member serving in the military.

We are a community that values taking care of each other. Twice every year, our Parent Teacher Community Organization  holds food drives so we can send free groceries home with families every Friday afternoon. Teachers, administrators, and parents donate time and money to maintain a clothing bank available to any community member in need.

And yet, despite any odds set against them, Sunrise students are voracious readers with high standards. Knowing their Mock Newbery Election results will make it to the actual Newbery Award Committee fills them with a sense of purpose and authority as they read. They develop strong opinions about literature, as well as powerfully articulated arguments about what makes a good book. Visitors to our club meetings are impressed by the depth of our conversations and by the confidence of our students as they stand up for their beliefs.
